When The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was released back in 2003, Nintendo’s decision to use cel-shaded graphics caused quite a stir among fans. During this month’s online Nintendo Direct, the Japanese gaming company presented a handful of screenshots from an updated copy of maritime adventure. Images posted to Nintendo’s Facebook page show the transformation that Windfall Island, one of the ocean-bound towns, has undergone in anticipation for a Wii U release.

While the cel-shading is still in use, the design is much cleaner, vibrant and pleasing to the eye. Link and pirate captain Tetra appear more dimensional with smoother lines and softer shadows. The town itself looks more detailed, however structures in the distance are partially obscured with the bloom effect.

No date has been set for the Wii U relaunch of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
