The next Sony console to succeed the PlayStation 4 is the PlayStation 5 and it is expected to launch in late 2020, near the holiday period.
An article posted to PlayStation.Blog also unveiled new technology being included in the controllers for the console. Replacing the existing “rumble” function in the controllers is “haptic” feedback. Haptic feedback allows for changes in the way movement is felt when playing, so that “…crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field.” according to the article.
Another new feature is called “adaptive triggers” on the L2 and R2 buttons. This technology allows variations in feeling when pressed, allowing the player to feel the difference between “…drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.”
Developers have received this new hardware so they can begin creating unique experiences to draw players further into the immersive environment envisioned in the next generation of gaming.
No other details on hardware specifications for the PlayStation 5, or a specific release date, were provided.
