Tears of the Kingdom-themed Switch OLED model unveiled; game abilities also shown

Ahead of the May launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo has announced a special Tears of the Kingdom-themed OLED Switch edition to land at retailers throughout North America on April 28th, 2023 followed by a carrying case and Pro Controller on May 12th, 2023.

The Nintendo Switch OLED system has a 7-inch OLED screen for crisper colour and darker blacks, wider table stand, 64 GB of internal storage (some of which is reserved for the system), and dock with a dedicated ethernet port. Included are a pair of Joy-Con controllers — the left in gold with a green pattern and the right in gold with pale white spirals. The dock is white with gold spirals on the right side, the crest of Hyrule in the centre, and Hylian text on the left.

A copy of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is not included with or pre-loaded on this console.

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is comes in a charcoal grey base, excluding the the right handle which is white, and is decorated with golden spirals and carbon black crest of Hyrule. The right joystick is surrounded by a golden ring and ancient Hylian text.

The Nintendo Switch carrying case is charcoal grey in colour with gold spirals and a black Hyrule crest on the front; the back features ancient Hylian designs in gold, with black spirals and maze patterns on the edge.

Suggested retail pricing was provided in US currency — the console at 359.99 USD, Pro Controller at $74.99 USD and carrying case at $24.99 USD. In Canada, based on current retail market price, the console will go for approximately $469.99 CAD, Pro Controller at $89.99 CAD, and the case at $24.99 CAD.

Coinciding with this announcement, Eiji Aonuma, Producer of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, hosted a brief 14-minute video demonstrating some of the unique abilities Link will wield in the game. Using Fuse, Link can combine two items into one weapon; Ultrahand to bond multiple items together; and Ascend to shift through solid ceilings.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases on May 12th, 2023 for all Nintendo Switch family consoles.
