Good Smile Company redesigns figure packaging to cut down on plastic waste

Popular Japanese manufacturer of anime and pop culture figures Good Smile Company has announced it is removing plastic blister packaging from its iconic Nendoroid and Nendoroid Basic product lines.

Nendoroids are chibi versions of characters such as Hatsune Miku (pictured at top), among others — think cutesy bodies with oversized heads and tiny limbs.

Current packaging has the figures bundled inside a thin flexible plastic tray inside a cardboard box. The updated design features plain white cardboard with paper inserts to protect the contents.

Good Smile Company explained this is part of an effort to reduce plastic waste, with these changes removing up to 84 percent in comparison. The website mentioned certain figures may involve assembly or come with additional joints. Not all products offered will see a change in packaging, though it’s not clear if that refers to figma or POP UP PARADE.

Buyers will not see an immediate shift in the packing as the redesign is slowly being introduced and as existing stock is reduced.

Online, some fans responded with comments about the plain packaging, voicing their concerns about displaying unopened Nendoroids and that it would be difficult to determine if the contents are damaged or even bootleg before purchasing.

Founded in 2001, Good Smile Company is a globally recognized manufacturer of plastic figurines based on anime, manga, video games and other pop culture entities. It’s well known for the Nendoroid, figma, and POP UP PARADE product lines along with scale models and goods which are sold through its own website and a network of distributors and retailers.
