Crunchyroll to discontinue its free, ad-supported tier on December 31, 2025

As the year ends, so too will free, ad-supported anime through the Crunchyroll app and website. However, it’s not all bad for fans as they can still enjoy the content without having to pay for a subscription.

The Crunchyroll Channel, available on Amazon Prime Freevee, LG Channels, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, and Sling TV, will continue to serve up anime hits for free with advertisements (commonly referred to as FAST – Free, Ad-Supported Television).

The Sony-owned company never really promoted their free tier, even as of today, it’s still listed on the FAQ’s without mentioning that it will disappear on Wednesday, December 31st, 2025. This entry-level restricted which series and episodes were served, excluding currently simulcast shows, and played ads frequently.

Come Thursday, January 1st, 2026, viewers will need a paid subscription to enjoy over 25,000 hours of anime, concerts and movies. The Fan tier begins at $9.99 CAD a month and contains no ads, with the Mega Fan tier going for $12.49 CAD a month, and allows streaming on four devices simultaneously along with access to the Crunchyroll Game Vault.
