Burnaby hosts Japanese festival to celebrate summer this month

With summer in full swing, the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre in Burnaby is hosting Nikkei Matsuri, a festival showcasing the rich traditions of Japanese culture, on August 30th and 31st, 2025.

This fun, family-friendly event indulges in everything Japanese with food, drink, music, cultural performances, games, exhibitions, and a bustling marketplace. The cultural centre will also open their archives to learn more about the contribution and heritage of Japanese Canadians have made on our communities.

Highlights include a Rakuichi – Mikoshi Parade and Lion Dance, Southern Wave Okinawan Music and Dance Society presentation, taiko drumming, Bon Odori Dance, musicians Rainy Night Troubles and CoSei, martial arts demonstrations, samurai and ninja shows, among the festival’s performers schedule.

This year’s special guest from Japan is WA Studio KIWA, a designer who specializes in upcycling kimonos into new outfits. Her work is admired by fashionistas and actresses and artists worldwide. At Nikkei Matsuri, Kiwa will present a special a dress crafted with 1,000 wishes, a unique performance to experience!

Hours for Nikkei Matsuri are 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on both Saturday, August 30th and Sunday, August 31st, 2025; tickets are priced at $12.00 online or $15.00 at the door; seniors over 65, children under 18, and Nikkei Centre Members can enter for free.

The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre is located at 6688 Southoaks Crescent, next to the intersection of Sperling Avenue and Kingsway. TransLink’s 119 bus stops right outside, or, is a ten minute walk north from Edmonds Station on the Expo Line.
