For 2020, Canadians are being asked to observe the annual ceremonies for Remembrance Day from their homes due to an increase of COVID-19 cases across the country.

Instead, this Wednesday, November 11th, events like those held regularly in Vancouver’s Victory Square and at Surrey’s cenotaph, are being scaled down and shown on television or online. No parades are scheduled and local officials are asking everyone to refrain from gathering at local monuments.

Many of Canada’s veterans are in age groups that are susceptible to the virus and large crowds of people at ceremonies could initiate a spread putting them at risk of infection.

Global TV will broadcast the Victory Square ceremony on their Global BC channel, their web site and Facebook page starting at 10:30 am PST, while Surrey’s service will only stream on two Facebook pages: Heritage Surrey and City of Surrey. New Westminster will hold their own virtual event, which is available on their web site. Richmond, too, will broadcast their limited service online. Coquitlam is offering a number of ways the community can say thank to our service members.

2020 also marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

We will never forget the sacrifices these men and women have made for Canada.
