The Legend of Zelda Movie

Legend of Zelda film premiere date moved up a week

In a surprise for Zelda fans, Nintendo has announced that the upcoming Legend of Zelda film will arrive in theatres worldwide earlier than expected. The theatrical release date has been moved up from May 7th, 2027, to April 30th, 2027.

The statement was posted—first in Japanese, then in English—by Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto on Nintendo’s official Twitter/X account.

Zelda fans are no strangers to delays across Nintendo’s family of systems. Most recently, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was originally scheduled to launch in 2022 before being pushed back to May 12th, 2023.

Details about the film remain limited. What is known so far is the casting of the two leads: English actress Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and English actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Filming in New Zealand reportedly wrapped in April 2026 and the project is now in post‑production.

Wes Ball is directing the untitled film, with financing provided through a partnership between Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo is covering half of the production costs, while Sony will distribute the film globally.
