This June, Sony is merging together their two online gaming subscriptions services — PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now — under the PlayStation Plus banner with three new pricing and perks tiers.
PlayStation Plus Essential
PlayStation Plus Essential is now the lowest tier and retains the same benefits as the existing PlayStation Plus plan: two downloadable games each month, discounts, cloud storage and online multiplayer. Prices will remain at $11.99 monthly, $29.99 quarterly, and $69.99 yearly for Canadian gamers.
PlayStation Plus Extra
PlayStation Plus Extra is the mid-level tier and includes access to over 400 PS4 and PS5 games with two downloadable games each month, discounts, cloud storage and online multiplayer. Pricing is set at $14.99 monthly, $39.99 quarterly, and $99.99 yearly for gamers in the US.
PlayStation Plus Premium
PlayStation Plus Premium is the top tier that includes an additional 340 games from PS3, PS2, PSP and PlayStation systems in both cloud streaming (PS3) and as downloads, as well as being able to try a game before purchase. Games can also be streamed on the PS4, PS5 and PC (where available). This is on top of the services offered in the Essential and Extra tiers; it is also the most expensive at $17.99 per month, $49.99 per quarter, $119.99 per year in the US (Canadians should expect to pay a little more, but those details were not shared).
Sony expects to launch the new plans for PlayStation Plus in June 2022 starting with Asia, then North America, Europe and the rest of the world. Most of the regions served on the PlayStation network can expect to see the service offered by the middle of this year. Titles offered during the roll out include Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal.
Once the updated PlayStation Plus becomes available, people who hold a PlayStation Now subscription will switch over automatically to the PlayStation Plus Premium tier and not incur an increase to their fees at time of launch.
