Crunchyroll assures viewers their data is safe following alleged leak

On Thursday, a Twitter/X account under the handle @therealwilsn posted images of text purportedly containing usernames and passwords taken from Crunchyroll, among other services.

I reached out to Crunchyroll, to which they confirmed account credentials were affected but have since been secured and that further analysis concluded none of the streaming service’s systems were compromised.

Here’s the official statement from Crunchyroll.

We are aware that login credentials for several streaming services, including Crunchyroll, were posted on social media and have resolved the issue. We have secured the affected accounts, investigated the situation and determined that there is no evidence that Crunchyroll’s systems have been compromised. Crunchyroll encourages subscribers to diversify and change passwords regularly and keep them confidential. For any questions regarding account security, fans can visit our Customer Service Help Page.

Both the tweet and account of @therealwilsn and were removed from Twitter/X.

Still, for those concerned about their account, can always change their password, use a password manager (Google and Apple offer secure storage for passwords, or a paid service including 1Password and Bitwarden), and, wherever possible, use two-factor authentication (2FA) for added security.
