ONE PIECE 600 million Commemoration

Video documents the ONE PIECE treasure’s ocean descent

When Eiichiro Oda started writing ONE PIECE in 1996, he already knew what the legendary “ONE PIECE” treasure was. Never written down, it remained secure within his head, that is until recently.

At 1:25 pm JST on Sunday, February 8th, 2026, Oda sat down at his desk — piled high with drawing instruments, papers, and other trinkets — to finally write down the treasure Gol D. Roger shouted out before his execution in the opening chapter of ONE PIECE.

Ensconced in a miniature treasure chest within a special pressure-resistant glass sphere, the container was loaded aboard a vessel operated by the Japan Agency for Marine‑Earth Science and Technology. A few days later, on February 12th, it was released into the ocean. Now resting at a depth of 651 meters (2,135.83 feet), the ONE PIECE lies far beyond the reach of the average pirate.

The gesture commemorates the milestone of ONE PIECE surpassing 600 million copies sold worldwide.

Once the video documenting the drop went live, internet sleuths immediately began dissecting clues in an effort to pinpoint its location. Redditors have already determined the chest’s undersea resting place to reside somewhere in Suruga Bay, off the shores of Shizuoka.

ONE PIECE is currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, an imprint of Japanese publishing conglomerate Shueisha. It first appeared in the 34th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22th, 1997, and has since grown to more than 1,100 chapters and, now, 600 million copies sold globally.
