Global anime survey reveals viewing trends and popularity rankings since 2020

A Japanese market analysis company commissioned a poll examining how people around the world have consumed anime over the past five years. The results are in — and for some, they may come as a surprise.

The Anime Global White Paper 2026 powered by Animeasure® was commissioned by GEM Partners and Interpret to survey 15,000 people across 15 countries, with the publicly published results focusing on nine major nations: Japan, the United States, China, India, South Korea, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Brazil. The survey, overall, did not include any data from Canada.

Overall, Japan reported modest growth, with a 12% increase in anime viewership — representing 55% of those surveyed. In the US, anime only saw a 17% growth over the period going from 10% in 2020 to 22% in 2025. India and South Korea saw the highest growth, with increases of 30% and 32% respectively between 2020 and 2025.
