Filming has begun on the live-action Gundam movie, with production underway in Queensland, Australia. The project will stream exclusively on Netflix, according to the platform.
Directed by Jim Mickle, the film will feature an original story rather than adapting an existing arc from the franchise. It’s described as centring on rival mech pilots with opposing allegiances in a long‑running war between Earth and its space colonies.
Confirmed cast includes Sydney Sweeney, Noah Centineo, Jason Isaacs, Jackson White, Javon Walton, Michael Mando, Gemma Chua‑Tran, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Ida Brooke, and Oleksandr Rudynskyi.
The untitled film is being produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks. Mickle and his partner Linda Moran join Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, Sydney Sweeney, Noah Centineo, and Enzo Marc as producers, while Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma, and Naohiro Ogata will serve as executive producers.
Gundam is a 47‑year‑old franchise that helped define the mecha genre with the debut of the anime Mobile Suit Gundam. Interest in the series has grown dramatically over the decades, expanding into animated television shows, films, video games, and a thriving plastic model kit market.
