During this morning’s Nintendo Direct, the Japanese gaming giant announced the release of the next Super Smash Bros. game for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS consoles.

Game director Masahiro Sakurai of Sora, LTD began the demonstration with the Nintendo 3DS version. To help distinguish the characters more easily, their colours and outlines are adjusted to make them more visible on the smaller screen. On the Wii U version, the characters will be in greater detail and have fluid movements with effects to show their speed and attacks.

Stages will vary based on the console used to play the game: the Wii U version will utilize levels from television-based consoles, whereas the Nintendo 3DS version will highlight levels from hand-held consoles.

Returning characters include Mario, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu and Pit. Three newcomers were also unveiled: Villager from Animal Crossing, Wii Fit Trainer and, most excitingly of all, Mega Man. Don’t expect the all of the attacks to be regurgitated from previous Super Smash Bros.: new moves and items keep the game exciting and fresh. Mega Man has some pretty awesome features if you watch the video below.

The gamers over at Kotaku have discovered that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will be released sometime in 2014.
