The first four of twelve new two-car trains are entering service on the Canada Line improving capacity by 15 percent on one of Metro Vancouver’s busier rapid transit lines.

As part of TransLink’s Mayors’ 10-Year Transit Expansion Plan, these additional cars will boost frequency and passenger space. As more trains are introduced throughout the year, capacity will increase to 35 percent.

The Canada Line has suffered capacity issues due to smaller trainsets (two cars versus four to six car trains on the Expo and Millennium Lines), shorter platforms and single tracking operations at YVR-Airport and Richmond-Brighouse stations.

Trains on the Canada Line are manufactured by Hyundai Rotem in South Korea and utilize electric traction motors instead of the linear induction motors used on the Bombardier-built trains on the Expo and Millennium Lines.
