The long awaited Millennium Line SkyTrain extension is kicking into gear with construction to begin in the coming months, TransLink today revealed the names for the six confirmed stations.

  • Great Northern Way – Emily Carr
  • Mount Pleasant
  • Broadway – City Hall
  • Oak – VGH
  • South Granville
  • Arbutus

The east-west route begins with an elevated guideway west of the VCC – Clark station with the Great Northern Way – Emily Carr station provides access to the adjacent Emily Carr University of Art and Design before descending underground for the remaining stops. Mount Pleasant is situated on Main Street; Broadway – City Hall will integrate with the existing Canada Line station; Oak – VGH is in close proximity to Vancouver General Hospital and other medical services; South Granville at the intersection of Broadway and Granville Street, and walking distance to Granville Island; ending with Arbutus as the western terminus. Arbutus will include an updated bus loop for transfers out to the University of British Columbia in Point Grey.

According to an article posted to TransLink’s blog The Buzzer, they included some insight into the naming process, including the inclusion of Emily Carr into the easterly station. Great Northern Way – Emily Carr not only identifies the street it’s situated on and the art school next door, it’s also to honour the Canadian artist. Emily Carr was born in 1871 in Victoria and is remembered for her paintings of local landscapes and Indigenous subjects. The university was tapped to nominate an artist or group in providing a public work to beautify the transit stop.

The Broadway Subway extension is expected for completion sometime in 2025. Funding is supplied by the City of Vancouver, as well as the provincial and federal governments.
