BC Ferries’ new mask signage causes a stir

For those who regularly travel the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland will no doubt be familiar with BC Ferries’ requirements to wear a face covering while onboard its vessels and in its facilities. With the COVID-19 pandemic dragging on, temporary signage is being replaced with more permanent fixtures, one of which is making the rounds online and on television.

The sign in question is a green circle with a white outline of a man’s head in profile wearing a mask. However, the artwork used easily is re-interpreted to include a part of male anatomy formed by the mask’s loop going around the ear.

While I haven’t seen this new placard in person (I was last on a ferry in early October, well before this update was rolled out across their fleet), lots of people have, some of whom have brought to the attention of BC Ferries on their social media accounts.

The image even made its way into the late night television circuit with shows like The Late Late Show with James Corden where the host played into jokes with it.

BC Ferries is well aware of how childish we are and is planning on replacing the sign with something less humorous, but not right away, giving us a little more time to take pictures.

And yes, masks are still required while onboard vessels and in terminal facilities.
