November was a big month for the console business with Microsoft and Sony launching two systems within days of each other: the Xbox Series S/X on November 10th, and the PlayStation 4 on November 12th, 2020 (for Japan and North America and Australasia, November 19th for Europe). However, both Sony and Nintendo came out ahead for selling the most consoles and reaping the financial rewards.

The portable Nintendo Switch continued to lead units sold in the United States, moving 1.35 million consoles for November 2020 based on data from the NPD Group. These figures include the Switch and the smaller, basic Switch Lite models. Out of the three current gaming systems, the Switch is the oldest, closing in on its third birthday next March.

But, it was Sony who made the most money with the PlayStation 5 — its two models, the disc-based console and a digital-only device which retail for approximately $499.99 USD and $399.99 USD ($629.99 CAD and $499.99 CAD) respectively. Consumers spent some $1.4 billion USD (approximately $1.7 billion CAD) on video game console hardware last month, according to the NPD Group as reported by VentureBeat.

Sales of the new DualSense Wireless Controller (pictured above) help push Sony’s profits ahead as gamers looked to purchase accessories to add to their experience. Accessories alone brought in $314 million USD ($401 million CAD) for the month of November.

Both the Xbox Series S/X and and PlayStation 5 are extremely popular systems, with many retailers sold out of the consoles.
