Jazz anime film Blue Giant to play in Cineplex locations this October

The soothing siren sounds of jazz are coming to the big screen when Blue Giant arrives in Canadian theatres for two nights only on October 8th and 9th, 2023.

Canadian cinema chain Cineplex will screen the 130 minute-long flick in Japanese audio with English subtitles.

GKIDS Films, which acquired distribution rights for the movie in North America, provided a rundown of the plot.

Dai Miyamoto’s life is turned upside down the day he discovers jazz. A former high school basketball player, Dai picks up a saxophone and begins practicing day and night, determined to become one of the greatest of all time. He leaves his sleepy hometown for the bustling nightclubs of Tokyo, but soon finds the life of a professional musician is not for the faint of heart. His passion eventually wins over the cocky but talented pianist Yukinori, and after Dai convinces his friend Shunji to learn the drums, they launch a new jazz trio whose rough sound contains a raw energy that quickly wins attention from local audiences. But what does it take to truly be great?

Based on the manga by Shinichi Ishizuka, Blue Giant is an electric performance of anime and music on the big screen. The film is directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, with a screenplay by NUMBER 8 and Shinichi Ishizuka, music scored by Hiromi Uehara, cinematography by Kasumi Togo, art direction by Satoru Hirayanagi an animation NUT Co., Ltd. Playing the saxophone are Tomoaki Baba, Shun Ishiwaka on drums and pianist Hiromi Uehara.

The Japanese voice cast is billed as:

  • Yuki Yamada as Dai Miyamoto
  • Shotaro Mamiya as Yukinori Sawabe
  • Amane Okayama as Shunji Tamada

Blue Giant premiered in Japanese theatres on February 17th, 2023.
