Live-action One Piece renewed for second season

It seems Netflix’s adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece made a big enough splash for the entertainment company to greenlight it for a second season.

Series creator Oda made the announcement via Transponder Snail –an in-universe creature for handling communication over great distances– explaining the work put into the first season, and how well received the show was, before signing off with a sketch of Tony Tony Chopper.

A date for when the second season will set sail was not provided.

According to Netflix, One Piece ranked in the top 10 of 93 countries, reaching the number one spot in 46, accumulating 37.8 million views within two weeks of broadcast. On Rotten Tomatoes, One Piece is Certified Fresh with a 96% Audience Score, from over 10,000 ratings submitted by viewers.

Other live-action series have not shared the same fortune as One Piece. Two years ago, Cowboy Bebop — another Netflix creation — lasted one season, was panned by viewers for being unfaithful to the original, despite the anime’s director being involved in the production.

It has always been Luffy’s dream to explore the ocean, but in order to do so, he needs a crew and a ship. With an appetite for treasure, Luffy’s vision becomes reality, but not always in his favour. The competition to locate the legendary One Piece is fierce and this small band of pirates must evade other corsairs, and of course, the relentless Marines…

The main cast features Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji; with Vincent Regan as Vice Admiral Garp, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida, Morgan Davies as Koby, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Langley Kirkwood as Captain Morgan, Jeff Ward as Buggy, Celeste Loots as Kaya, Alexander Maniatis as Klahadore, McKinley Belcher III as Arlong, Craig Fairbrass as Chef Zeff, Steven Ward as Mihawk, Chioma Umeala as Nojiko, and Michael Dorman as Gol D. Roger. The series is created in cooperation with Shueisha, with production by Tomorrow Studios and Neflix. Matt Owens and Steven Maeda serve as writers, executive producers and showrunners, with Eiichiro Oda, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements as executive producers.

First published in 1997, One Piece has accumulated 105 individual manga volumes, over 1,050 anime episodes, 15 feature films, the most recent being One Piece Film: Red, multiple video games, and a theme park in Japan. In North America, the One Piece anime streams on multiple platforms including NetflixCrunchyroll, while Viz Media handles the print and digital versions of the manga.
