One Piece manga on pause as Oda takes break

Eiichiro Oda is taking a three-week break according to the official One Piece account on Twitter/X, which included a letter written by Oda in Japanese and translated into English.

According to the message, Oda says the break is needed following the recent passing of fellow mangaka Akira Toriyama, but re-assures readers this is more “scheduled maintenance” for his own self-care.

Even though he won’t be drawing, he will still keep busy by “figuring out what the ONE PIECE actually is” and included some sketches of characters in the current Egghead Arc. He asks fans to watch the live-action One Piece on Netflix, as well as the Anytime One Piece on YouTube before it moves over to TikTok on March 23rd, 2024.

One Piece is currently serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine; with the last issue being issue 17 which releases on Monday, March 25th, 2024. One Piece will restart with issue 21 on Monday, April 22nd, 2024. In North America, Viz Media publishes the English-translated manga in print and digital formats; it is also available on the MANGA Plus app.
