Aspiring manga artists now have an opportunity to get their work in front of readers through new program offered by by VIZ Media.
Called VIZ Originals One-Shots, these short manga stories are issued digitally through the publisher’s VIZ Manga service alongside titles from Rumiko Takahashi, Junji Ito, and Haro Aso.
How serious is VIZ Media with VIZ Originals One-Shots? They’ve tapped Hisashi SASAKI, the former Editor-in-Chief of Weekly Shonen Jump to lead it. SASAKI has worked with some of the biggest names in manga, including Eiichiro Oda, Masashi Kishimoto and Tite Kubo.
VIZ Media is a subsidiary of Japanese publishing corporations Shueisha and Shogakukan.
Four stories were selected to launch VIZ Originals One-Shots: Cinematic Certitude by Naf, Ancient Melody by Jonathan Lareva, Skin & Bone written by Josh Tierney and illustrated by Valentin Serber, and The Stranger by Liam Naughton. Readers will find new one-shots added each month.
Gaining access to VIZ Media’s platforms enables creators a wider audience and the ability to establish a presence that could open up further opportunities through licensing and other avenues, potentially even anime, according to a press release from the company.
VIZ Manga is available on Apple iOS, Android devices and on the web.
