Even though the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation is in December, Sony has announced some of the ways they’ll be marking this milestone.
Gamers can tune into Spotify for soundtracks from classic titles including God of War, God of War II, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Twisted Metal, Starhawk, and, Unit 13. They’ll also be available for purchase on Amazon Music, Apple Music, and other digital music storefronts.
Shapes of Play is a collection of three games to play utilizing the iconic triangle, cross, circle and square symbols that have graced PlayStation controllers from the beginning. Challenge a friend to line up four different shapes of the same colour to win in Shapes of Play: Battle. In Shapes of Play: Create, the objective is to have fun with constructing things out of magnetic shapes. And finally, relax after a rough session with Shapes of Play: Recharge. Shapes of Play launches in the US, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg in December 2024.
Later this month, players can participate in free online multiplayer matches without needing a PlayStation Plus membership! Any pre-purchased game on the PS4 and PS5 consoles are eligible, which takes place on Saturday, September 21st, and Sunday September 22nd, 2024. Consoles must be connected to the internet and have a PlayStation Network account.
That same weekend, PS5 owners who have NBA 2K24, NBA 2K25, Madden NFL 24, MLB The Show 24, EA UFC 5, Tekken 8, and Guilty Gear Strive can partake in tournaments with these games. Winners will receive in-game specials or one of two limited PlayStation 30th anniversary avatars. Further details are available on compete.playstation.com.
During the holiday period this year, a free trial version of Gran Turismo 7 called My First GT will allow gamers to test out some of the first cars, tracks and events from the first title in the Gran Turismo series.
The original PlayStation console was launched in Japan on December 3rd, 1994, then Canada and the United States on September 9th, 1995 and a gradual worldwide rollout in the following months. The popular system surpassed expectations, amassing an impressive library of video games including Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, and Spyros the Dragon. Its popularity cemented Sony’s place in the gaming industry, which led to the successful releases of the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and current generation console, PlayStation 5.
