Angel's Egg

GKIDS debuts 4K remaster of Angel’s Egg in Canadian cinemas

The 1985 anime film, newly restored in collaboration with its director, will screen in Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub for a limited run in mid-November according to distributor GKIDS.

Canadian cinema chains Cineplex and Landmark Cinemas will screen Angel’s Egg starting Wednesday, November 19th, 2025

Angel’s Egg, a collaboration between acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and celebrated artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D), was originally released direct-to-video in 1985.

GKIDS posted a synopsis of Angel’s Egg to its website:

In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. At first, it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two.

Angel’s Egg was animated by Studio DEEN, directed by Mamoru Oshii, produced by Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, Toshio Suzuki, and Yutaka Wada, written by Mamoru Oshii, and with music composition by Yoshihiro Kanno.

It stars Mako Hyodo as the voice of the unnamed girl, and Jinpachi Nezu as the unnamed boy, with Keiichi Noda as the narrator. Appearing in the English dub are Brianna Knickerbocker as the voice of the unnamed girl, with Justice Slocum as the unnamed boy.

  1. Don’t spoil the one and only plot twist in the body of your article, you dolt! This is an arthouse-style movie; it barely has any dialogue. That’s the climax of the entire film, and one of the only things that happens in the film at all!
