An animated retelling of a traditional Japanese folklore is coming to Netflix when Cosmic Princess Kaguya! lands exclusively on the streaming platform on Thursday, January 22nd, 2026.
In his debut directorial project, Shingo Yamashita partnered with Netflix, and Studio Colorido and Studio Chromato to adapt The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter for a modern audience. Follow an exciting journey shaped by music and friendship as it leads into a fantastical virtual world alive with emotion.
The movie focuses on music from a number of renowned Vocaloid producers. Songs selected “Ex-Otogibanashi” by ryo (supercell), “Reply” by kz (livetune), “Shunkan Symphony” by 40mP, “Watashi wa, Watashi no Koto ga Suki” by HoneyWorks, “Hoshi Furu Umi” by Aqu3ra, and “Remember” by yuigot.
Netflix will present Cosmic Princess Kaguya! in both Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English.
Appearing in the Japanese voice cast are:

- Anna Nagase as the voice of Iroha Sakayori
- Saori Hayami as the voice of Yachiyo Runami
- Rie Kugimiya as the voice of Fushi

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is described as:
Iroha Sakayori is a seemingly normal 17-year-old high school student struggling to balance their school and part-time work life. When she has time, Iroha logs into the virtual world of Tsukuyomi — which is run by the famous streamer Yachiyo Runami — to support them while playing battle games. When Iroha comes across a portal on her way home, it changes her life in more ways than one.
