TransLink has announced their intention to temporarily close the Burrard Station on the Expo Line in 2022 for two years to completely renovate the facility.

The station, which opened in 1985, is getting a complete make-over that will double the number of escalators to 10 and include the installation of a second elevator. The entrance will shift to the north-east corner of Burrard and Dunsmuir Streets to better serve the bus stops along Dunsmuir; this will open up a new public plaza that will feature an indigenous art installation. Improvements to the station and rail infrastructure will allow the transit system to operate reliably in the coming years.

Unlike the recent renovation of the nearby Granville Station which saw the main entrance closed to replace the escalators, Burrard Station will fully close so construction can take place without having passengers navigate changing paths to the platforms and exits. This closure will save an estimated $35 million CAD and cut down an additional two-and-a-half years of work had the station remained open.

During this closure, Waterfront and Granville Stations will pick up the slack and TransLink will modify bus routes to funnel passengers to these stations. Further details on these changes will come later in the year.

According to a statement shared by TransLink, Burrard Station is the fourth busiest on the SkyTrain network, with approximately 7.6 million passengers passing through in 2019.
