For months, fans of the mecha anime Gundam were teased with a now-confirmed themed pair of Nike Dunk high-tops fashioned after the RX-0 Unicorn unit.
Nike shared a brief animation Instagram and tagged the accounts for Paul Rodriguez and Yuto Horigome, both of whom are sponsored by the Beaverton, Oregon-based brand’s skateboarding division.
Made in the style of the RX-0 Gundam unit that is so iconic of the series, the high-top features a white leather base with red accents; the toe cap emulates the face of the mecha, while the outsides have a stylized “swoosh” fastened by Velcro, giving owners an opportunity to customize the sneaker (the inside “swoosh” is fixed in place). The ankle support is black with a soft red interior and white heel pulltab. A red unicorn icon of the Vist Foundation is emblazoned on the heel.
The Nike SB Dunk High ‘Gundam’ hits select skate shops in Japan, China and the European Union on Monday, September 27th, 2021, followed by retailers in the United States (and presumably Canada ) on Saturday, October 9th, 2021 and the infamous SNKRS app (which is not available in Canada) on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021.
The Gundam franchise celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019 and has since spanned multiple animated shows, manga, games and models.
