Sony has announced a new loyalty program called PlayStation Stars which allows gamers to collect points while playing video games according to a post on the PlayStation.Blog.
PlayStation Stars is free to enroll in and participants will earn points by playing games — rewards are obtained by winning tournaments, collecting special trophies, including being the first person in their time zone to reach platinum in a blockbuster game. Or, for those not as competitive, just play any game in the “Monthly Check-in” campaign to grab some points.
So what does one do with the point they collect? Use them towards adding funds to the PSN wallet and exclusive items in the PlayStation Store. Gamers who have signed up for PlayStation Plus can use accrued points towards purchases in the PlayStation Store.
Additionally, Sony is introducing “Digital Collectibles” which are virtual representations of popular characters, devices and other items for display in a virtual gallery on their device. To keep things interesting, limited edition collectibles will appear in the mix, giving something extra for player to keep an eye open for.
No set date for when PlayStation Stars goes live was mentioned, however the article did disclose that Sony is planning “phased regional rollouts” later this year which means this likely will be available worldwide and not limited to the United States.
