Slam Dunk movie bank shots into Canadian and US theatres this summer

It’s time to head courtside to watch THE FIRST SLAM DUNK this summer. Toei Animation has announced that GKIDS will distribute the sports anime flick to theatres across Canada and the United States.

Ryota Miyagi is a prodigy in basketball. Inspired by his older brother, Ryota picked up a ball and joined his high school’s team. In his second year with Shohoku, Ryota make it to the Inter-High School National Championship only to face the defending champs, Sannoh Kogyo High School.

Takehiko Inoue, who created the original Slam Dunk manga, was involved with the development of THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, working as both director and scriptwriter. Production was handled by Toei Animation and Dandelion Animation Studio.

The Japanese voice cast bills Shugo Nakamura as Ryota Miyagi, Subaru Kimura as Hanamichi Sakuragi, Shinichiro Kamio as Kaede Rukawa, Maaya Sakamoto as Haruko Akagi, and Jun Kasama as Hisashi Mitsui.

It is not yet known which theatre chains will show the movie here in Canada.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK premiered in Japanese cinemas on December 3rd, 2022, before opening in international markets starting with South Korea and China.

July 6th, 2023 update

Cineplex and Landmark Cinemas locations across Canada will screen the movie in its original Japanese audio with English subtitles and dubbed in English.
