North American animation distributor GKIDS has announced they have acquired the rights to bring Studio Ghibli’s latest movie, The Boy and the Heron, to theatres across Canada and the United States later this year.

Written and directed by acclaimed Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, the Japanese name of the film — How Do You Live? — also counts co-founder Toshio Suzuki as producer, and a musical arrangement by composer Joe Hisaishi. All animation in The Boy and the Heron is hand-drawn, a testament of the studio’s commitment to tradition.

While the movie shares the same name as Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel, the story is completely unrelated.

Unlike previous Studio Ghibli features, no promotional materials, aside from a single poster, were made available for public advertisement of the film.

GKIDS has handled distribution of Studio Ghibli’s contemporary cinematic works including The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There, and From Up on Poppy Hill.

The Boy and the Heron premiered in cinemas across Japan on July 14th, 2023.

A specific date for the North American release was not provided.
