Netflix to end ad-free Basic plan in Canada this year

Watching Netflix in Canada is about to become more expensive as the streaming company will discontinue its lowest tier advertisement-free plan according to a recently released financial document.

Initially reported by Global News, the information is buried deep (page six) in a document outlining Netflix’s fiscal report to shareholders for the previous year. The removal of the Basic plan in the second quarter of 2024 will impact both new and existing customers in Canada and the United Kingdom, before rolling out to other countries. An exact time-line for this initiative was not provided.

The Basic plan was priced at $9.99 a month; the next cheapest plan is the Standard with ads at $5.99 a month. Those looking to enjoy content without ads, will need to open their wallets a bit more for the Standard plan at $16.49 a month.

Revenue is up for Netflix as the streaming market remains tight amongst a multitude of players.

Netflix outlined the decision behind phasing out the option in its shareholder report.

“We seek to provide a range of prices and plans to meet a wide range of needs, including highly competitive starting prices. As we invest in and improve Netflix, we’ll occasionally ask our members to pay a little extra to reflect those improvements, which in turn helps drive the positive flywheel of additional investment to further improve and grow our service.”

The streaming company has embarked on an ambitious plan for new shows and movies to retain viewers and entice new sign-ups, including acquisitions of anime, as well as the follow-up season for the acclaimed live-action One Piece series.
