The Boy and the Heron wins Golden Globe for best animated film

Studio Ghibli’s latest masterpiece, The Boy and the Heron scooped up the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Sunday January 7th, 2024. It is the first time an anime movie has won in the category.

Also nominated in the category were Suzume, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Elemental, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Wish.

Director Hayao Miyazaki was not in attendance to accept the award.

Following the win, Studio Ghibli co-founder and producer Toshio Suzuki released a statement shared on Twitter/X by North American distributor GKIDS Films. In it, he acknowledged the “historic” moment before mentioning the recent disasters affecting Japan. While feeling “a sense of despair” in light of these tragic events, he “hope[s] the bright news of winning an award can bring a smile to everyone’s face.”

The Boy and The Heron premiered in CineplexLandmark Cinemas, and  Cinémas Guzzo locations across Canada on December 8th, 2023, in both Japanese with subtitles and dubbed in English; it will also appear in the large-screen IMAX format.

Titled How Do You Live?, the movie opened in Japanese cinemas on July 14th, 2023 to critical acclaim and has appeared at many film festivals, including events in both Toronto and Vancouver.
