Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto made a big announcement for Mario Day this year. In a pre-recorded video, the creator of everyone’s favourite mustachioed plumber revealed that work on a second Super Mario Bros. Movie is already underway.
Also appearing in the video, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri adding that directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning, with Illumination Studios Paris currently involved with storyboarding and set design; animation has not yet begun. A tentative premiere date for the United States is planned for April 23rd, 2026, with an international release scheduled throughout the month of April.
No further details on storyline, setting or cast were mentioned.
March 10th is recognized as Mario Day due to the shorthand for the date spelling out the character’s name. Nintendo generally offers special deals on Super Mario games to mark the occasion.
