Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli has won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature with the film The Boy and the Heron during the 96th Academy Awards.
Also nominated in the category were Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
This is the second Oscar for Studio Ghibli following Spirited Away which also claimed the Best Animated Feature accolade at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003.
Neither Miyazaki or producer Toshio Suzuki were present to receive the award at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.
Set during World War II, the mother of Mahito Maki perishes in a fire. Escaping to the safety of the countryside, Mahito happens upon a grey heron and finds himself looking for what he has thought lost.
The Boy and The Heron premiered in Cineplex, Landmark Cinemas, and Cinémas Guzzo locations across Canada on December 8th, 2023, in both Japanese with subtitles and a star-studded English dub. GKIDS Films is handling the North American distribution of the movie.
Titled How Do You Live?, the movie opened in Japanese cinemas on July 14th, 2023 to critical acclaim and has appeared at many film festivals, including events in both Vancouver and Toronto.
