Sony introduces the PlayStation 5 Pro console

The next iteration of the PlayStation 5 console was unveiled earlier today, offering gamers a higher performance system with a higher price point when it launches in two months time.

The PlayStation 5 Pro includes a number of major updates:

  • An improved GPU that has a 67 percent increase in compute units over the current PS5 model and 28 percent boost in memory response time offering up to 120 fps in supported games.
  • Enhanced ray tracing that triples the current level of light refraction with the current PS5 system.
  • Artificial intelligence upscaling dubbed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution providing extreme clarity driven by machine learning-based technology on select PS5 titles.
  • PS5 Pro Game Boost fixes performance and stability on over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 titles.
  • Support for Wi-Fi 7 in regions supporting the standard, virtual reality and 8K output support.

Sony decided to opt-out of providing a built-in disc drive for the PS5 Pro, instead going for a 2 TB internal SSD — the already available PS5 external disc drive is compatible with the PS5 Pro and sold separately.

Each new PS5 Pro will come with a DualSense wireless controller and with the latest hit Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.

The PS5 Pro has an MSRP of $699.99 USD or $959.99 CAD here in Canada. That’s a considerable increase over the $649.99 CAD for the existing PS5 slim console which includes a built-in disc drive.

PS5 Pro is scheduled to launch in Canada on Thursday, November 7th, 2024 with pre-orders opening on Thursday, September 26th, 2024.
