Grand Theft Auto VI pushed back to 2026

In December 2023, gamers were treated their first look at Grand Theft Auto VI with a tentative launch date sometime this year. Now developer Rockstar Games has pushed that date back by another year, saying the game will now release on Tuesday, May 26th, 2026.

Acknowledging the hype surrounding the latest entry in a statement posted to social media, publisher Rockstar Games is claiming this delay is needed to “…deliver at the level of quality…” fans have come to expect. Such a large game requires a lot of hard work in terms of coding and testing to ensure playability (unlike what happened with Cyberpunk 2077 which suffered from bugs and performance issues immediately following release).

Set in the sunny beachfront metropolis of Vice City, GTA VI spans multiple tropical islands, sandy shores, a bustling port, luxurious high-rises, and sparsely populated rural swamps — a complete overhaul from the environment last fully explored in the 2002 title Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

The last major title in the series was GTA V which launched in 2013 and remains popular with online play.

Grand Theft Auto VI is being released for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
