A classic anime film and its OVA’s are coming for home release later this year. Scotland-based Anime Limited has partnered with streaming giant Crunchyroll to bring Macross Plus in a special collector’s edition Blu-ray to Canada, the United States and United Kingdom during Fall 2024.
Macross Plus Ultimate Edition is packed in a large slipcase containing an 180-page artbook, nine vividly-coloured postcards, a “promotional poster” of virtual pop idol Sharon Apple, and of course, two discs comprising of the feature film and four OVA episodes.
Both the Macross Plus movie and OVA were directed by Shoji Kawamori and Shinichio Watanabe, with a script written by Keiko Nobumoto, music scored by Yoko Kanno, and animation production by Triangle Staff. The movie premiered in Japan on August 27th, 1995; the four OVA episodes aired over nearly year between August 25th, 1994 and June 25th, 1995.

In the year 2040, on the distant planet Eden, former childhood friends Isamu Dyson and Guld Goa Bowman find themselves pitted against each other as test pilots of rival teams in a competition to decide the next generation of variable mecha fighters. The two must also deal with their own unresolved history with mutual love interest, Myung Fang Lone, who has returned as the manager of Sharon Apple, the AI pop star (virturoid) and the galaxy’s biggest singing sensation.
When Sharon’s advanced artificial intelligence gains consciousness, Isamu, Myung, and Guld must face their turbulent past and come together as Sharon Apple becomes self-aware and takes control of the Macross battlefortress itself!
Pre-orders for Macross Plus Ultimate Edition begin at 9:00 am PDT (12:00 pm EDT) on Thursday, June 6th, 2024 through the Crunchyroll Store for fans in Canada and the United States; those in the United Kingdom can place their order through All the Anime, with a European edition to come at a later date.
