To commemorate the Digimon series 25th anniversary, a special video set to the opening theme “Butter-Fly” by Koji Wada was released on Thursday. The video revisits key scenes of each main character with their corresponding Digimon from the original series.
The first of August is recognized as Digimon Day (or Odaiba Day), the in canon date when Digimon Adventure takes place. On this date, seven children attending summer camp find themselves transported into the Digital World and befriend creatures called Digimon (a portmanteau of Digital Monsters). Searching for a way to return home, the children become entangled in multiple plots threatening the peace of the Digital World, in turn impacting things back in the real world…
Chika Sakamoto reprises her role as the voices of Koromon and Agumon. Staff credited include director Masao Okubo, with storyboarding by Yu Kamatani, animation production by Yumeta Company and production by Toei Animation.
Digimon Adventure first aired on March 7th, 1999 and ended 54 episodes later, on March 26th, 2000. It spawned a number of sequels, films, remakes, video and trading card games.
“Butter-Fly” appears throughout the Digimon series in various styles and remixes. It was the first rock song ever performed by Wada and quickly became a hit, earning him the nickname “Immortal Butterfly Anisong Singer.” Wada died from cancer in 2016.
