The Boy and the Heron

Netflix to stream The Boy and the Heron starting October 7

Hayao Miyazaki’s latest masterpiece, The Boy and the Heron, will begin streaming on Netflix globally — excluding the United States and Japan — starting Monday, October 7th, 2024, according to the media company’s social media account.

Animated by the legendary Studio Ghibli, the film was written and directed by Miyazaki, with Toshio Suzuki as producer, and music composed by Joe Hisaishi. Kenshi Yonezu’s song “Spinning Globe” was selected as the movie’s theme.

Set during World War II, the mother of Mahito Maki perishes in a fire. Escaping to the safety of the countryside, Mahito happens upon a grey heron and finds himself looking for what he has thought was lost.

The Boy and the Heron opened in Japanese cinemas, where the film is titled as How Do You Live?, on July 14th, 2023 to critical acclaim. GKIDS Films secured the rights to distribute the anime in the west, and dubbed it into English with all-star cast; it premiered in Canadian theatres on December 8th, 2023. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards earlier this year.
